Contribution of meandering rivers to natural carbon fluxes: Evidence from the Ucayali River, Peruvian Amazonia

Better understanding the fate of atmospheric carbon (C) captured by plant photosynthesis is essential to improve natural C flux modelling. Soils are considered as major terrestrial bioreactor and repository C, whereas channel networks floodplain rivers collect transport, throughout aquatic continuum, a significant part primary production until its export through outgassing or sequestration in marine sediments. Here, we show that river meandering forested floodplains crucial widely overlooked Earth surface process promoting fluxes from atmosphere via vegetation. Over recent period 35 years (1984–2019), quantified those one most active on Earth, Ucayali River, Peru, South America. We used map time series combined with above-ground forest data derive amount annually growing vegetation within meander belt, well exported continuum lateral erosion. found annual building erosion areas was nearly balanced over 19.0±7.7×103 ha?1 yr?1 19.8±6.7×103 yr?1, respectively. While forests belt 0.01±0.05×106 Mg provided 100-fold streamflow, i.e. 0.9±0.4×106 yr?1. Our findings revealed migration River 10-times more lignified per unit area (44.7±21.4 yr?1) than non-meandering central Amazonian do. Together, these point importance quantifying overall contribution worldwide.
